Change is a part of life, and even welcomed changes can be hard to adjust to. Maybe the change we were looking forward to wasn’t as satisfying as we hoped it would be, or it brought unintended consequences. Perhaps the change was something we didn’t see coming, or one we have tried to avoid at all costs.
Many women navigating life transitions feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain. Common issues include feeling a loss of identity after kids leave home (i.e., empty nest), struggling with self-worth during a career change, or managing complex family dynamics in a new blended family. These shifts can lead to loneliness, self-doubt, and the pressure of balancing others’ expectations with personal fulfillment.
What are Life Transitions?
Life transitions is a term often used to describe a major event in one’s life and the subsequent adjustment period that follows. Although there is typically one main event, it often has a ripple effect of smaller changes that together alter one’s life. Examples of common life transitions include moving out of the parental home, getting married, having children, career changes, empty-nest, and parental loss.
Sometimes people experience transitions that are uncommon, so finding someone to relate to can be difficult, resulting in feelings of isolation. There are some life transitions that are commonly experienced among most people, however, our characteristics, circumstances, and history create multiple layers that produce unique reactions to these transitions.

Women experience multiple transitions during their lives. Whether it’s going off to college, starting a new job, moving in with a partner, getting divorced, or adjusting to retirement, women are evolving throughout their lives.
Other factors, such as their family of origin, partner, children, culture, community, and broader society often complicate the navigation through transitions. Things can get even more confusing when women are going through multiple transitions during the same period.
